米芾生性常喜欢到太湖之畔游山玩水，吟诗赏石。宋哲宗元祐三年（1088）的九月，应湖州（浙江吴兴）郡守林希之邀请，赴太湖近郊的苕溪游览。正值时宜，米芾遣兴抒怀之余赋诗数首。临行前，林希取出珍藏二十多年的蜀素一卷，请他题写诗文。米芾信手而成此《蜀素帖》。
《蜀素帖》被后人誉为“中华di一美帖”，是“中华十大传世名帖”之一。人称“天下第八行书”。
